Unless this means that the two of you will be having non-exclusive sex with one another from time to time (and that is called friends with benefits by the way) the two of you are not going to be friends. Even if you manage to act civil around each other, expect no more than a casual 'hey' when you bump into each other in the mall. Yes, I will find someone better or worse, depending on my mood. I might even develop a particular fondness for assholes after you and that is my prerogative. And please, don't make all those self deprecating comments. That just reflects badly on me and my choice of mate. I mean it is bad enough that we're breaking up, there is no need to add salt to the wound by telling me how BAD I am at this whole boy/girlfriend thing.

This happens when the opposite party feels as if he/she is obliged to tell you how to live your life post break up. They'll tell you to go read a book or take up some pretentious hobby. As if over time, you'll be so caught up with painting nude art that you'll forget about all the shit that he/she's been feeding you in order to cover up all feelings of guilt. It was most probably the perfume that first caught my attention. In my life I have only known two guys who smells the way you do. One being my best friend, the other my brother. So it was already a good start, and I've only just gotten here. It was a long wait, so I did what any other bored person would do - I stared.

I stared at how the sunlight gets caught in your hair, making it light brown in some areas, and dark in others. I stared at how well your t-shirt sleeve envelopes your triceps. I stared at the curvature of your arms - noticed how tanned they were, how well defined. Stared at your TagHeur watch, noticed how well you wore it (guys these days have skinny wrists). I noticed that unlike everybody else you weren't playing with an iPhone, iPod, iPad or iSomething. You were, like me, just waiting.

And I'd admit, there was a small part of me that wanted to tap you on your shoulder, to have you turn around - so I can say hello. In my mind, you must have been good looking, even if you're not, I'd still like to say hello. A little part of me was curious about the stranger sitting in front of me. Do you play sports? What scares you? What makes you laugh, brings tears to your eyes? Do you have a girlfriend? Are you alone this Valentine's? Do you like animals? Are you afraid of insects? Can we be friends?

A small part of me wanted to ask for your number. And so, I mustered every ounce of courage that I had, and just as I was about to...

Not to mention the countless sleepovers, the never ending phone sex until 4am, the dance practices, the Facebook comments, the dilemma of shopping, the comparing of shoes, the fashion advice, the inside jokes, the gifts, the cards, the car rides, the eye-eye thing. And everything in between that we've shared and I've missed out.

Dear sexy, when you told me you were leaving, I refuse to believe that. I refuse to believe that the one person who gets me the way that you do, the one person who knows me better than I know myself would leave. But as the 16th draw closer, it is becoming more and more real. And I swear that there isn't a moment that goes by where the thought of you leaving never bring tears to my eyes.

You may think that I am over-reacting, you're not going very far, we are only separated by an ocean. Besides we live in a technology advanced society where our loved ones are but a phone call, or WhatsApp away. But to tell you the truth, I am terrified. And I have never been so scared to lose a friendship than the one I have with you. You see, I've had best friends once and when they went abroad, we vow that we will keep in touch, that nothing will change.

But everything changed. Now they are but strangers. A 4 year friendship, which I thought was built on the strongest materials unknown to man - was forgotten, destroyed by nothing more than geographical distance and ignorance. Always ignorance.

That is why I am terrified. I remember telling you that we have to be friends forever, for you know too much about me. I am scared to lose this. And everything we have worked so hard for.

There isn't a moment that passes where I pray that you will change your mind and decide to stay. That there was something I could do to make you think twice. But then again, they always say,

You were always the one who notices when something was wrong, who would spend hours on the phone (despite mine being a 019) just to make sure I was alright.

You were my biggest supporter, the one who cheers the loudest, the one always present, the one who offers kind words and hugs when I failed.

You were my confidant. I would tell you things I would not tell anyone. That with every secret shared, we grew closer.

You were my joy. You made me laugh with jokes no one else would get. You are witty and funny - your humor, till today, none could rival.

You were my source of fun, never ending, mindless fun. Always the first to say yes to drinks, and meet ups.

You were my vice president, who did everything so I never had to lift a finger.

You were, in short, the best thing that ever happened to me.

And I promise to do everything in my power, and a little bit more to make sure that we keep this friendship. That no geographical distance, or slutty Sarawak girl, or assignments, or even life could come between us.

That when you come back to visit, I would take you out for drinks, and roller coaster rides, I will make you tang yuen, and show you to my mother, I would go shopping with you and have sleepovers and we'll eat Chipster and bitch about everyone and everything. On days where there is just a little too much sunshine, one could use a cloud, or two.

You will need:

3 egg whites

1 cup of fine granulated sugar

1 tsp of the essence of vanilla

1 tsp of white vinegar

1tsp corn flour

4tbsp of boiling water

For garnish:

½ cup of softly whipped cream, or more.

Strawberries or anything brightly colored

Make sure your bowl is clean and dry.

Mix all ingredients except for sugar.

Beat egg whites until frothy.

Add in sugar in several additions.

Beat until you from stiff peaks.

To test, upturn bowl over your head – nothing should fall out.

Preheat oven to 180°C.

Sprinkle tray with corn flour to prevent your cloud from sticking.

Pour your cloud onto baking sheet, and form peaks – these will crisp up and be dangerously moreish.

Bake for 15minutes, then turn oven down to 150°C.

Bake for a further 45 minutes.

Leave to cool inside your oven. Be patient.

Cover with softly whipped cream and blood red strawberries.

Serve immediately and the scorching heat wouldn't be so bad anymore.

Let me tell you a story.

I promise it will be a short one.

This is a story about my puppy, Bella.

This story starts, unlike most stories, with a cat.

It was a cold, stormy day - mind this is not a cliche, but an accurate weather report.

My brother found it sitting on our windowsill.

It was grey - or filthy, probably filthy - with stripes running along its body.

It was cold and shivering and hungry. Always hungry.

Milk was made hastily.

And both my brother and I watched as it lapped it up, hesitantly and then with wild abandon.

"Should we name it?"
"No. Names will mean that we are attached"

"Look at the stripe down its forehead. Doesn't it look like Aang from Airbender?"

"Yeah, it kinda does, doesn't it?"

"Can we name it Aang?"

"Aang it is"

And for a long time, we watched as Aang licked and purred.

We laughed as it run between our legs and after loose thread.

If ever it was possible to love something so hard in such a short period of time, this was it.

But moments like these never lasts.

Soon it was 6pm.

"Mummy's coming back"
"I know"
"You know she hates cats"
"And all living things"

"What do we do with Aang?"

Now I did promise that this story will be a short one. So here goes.

There was a basket. And protests, in the forms of purrs and scratches.

We walked two streets, with a cat in a basket.

Not to get rid of him, never to get rid of him.

I do not know how long we walked for

But when we did put him down, he didn’t run.

He merely looked up, with probing eyes.

With a question he will never be able to ask.

Why?

We ran home.

With a basket, empty of cat but filled with regret.

“What if he comes back tomorrow?”

“That’s impossible”
“What if he does?”
“Then we’ll do what we can to keep him”
“Really?”

“I promise”

And by some miracle, or stroke of Luck, or by the hand of a higher power,
Aang came back.

He sat on the very same windowsill.

As filthy as before. And hungry, always hungry.

And one would think that all is well.

But we weren’t there when this little miracle happened.

Mother was.

There was a broom. And Aang was no more.

When the story was told over the dinner table,

With the nonchalance of one who obviously never had the privilege

Of spending time with our (yes, we’ve laid claim) little Airbender,

“How could you?”
“It’s just a cat”

“But a broom? Was that necessary?”

“It’s just a cat. Eat your dinner”

For weeks we looked for Aang.

Bowl of milk and ball of thread in hand,

And equipped with nothing but hope.

At night, there were prayers.

Fervent prayers for a missing cat.

We never found Aang. Neither did he return to our windowsill.

But few months later, we got Bella.

A Maltese of three months old that stole our hearts with playful nips and the ability to pee on every carpet we own.

Mother loves animals now, cats included, and we got rid of that broom.

And though we love Bella to death,

We still check our windowsill from time to time.

I don't understand why she is crying. One minute she was shouting - her hands balled up in fists - and the next thing you know, her face crumpled and leak. I stared at her futile attempts to blow her nose - she is so beautiful, even when she cries - I just stared. I mean, what else can I do? If I touch her, that is just going to either make her angry again or cry even harder. What am I supposed to say? I have said everything that I am supposed to say. What if I say something wrong and it causes another argument? God, I love her. And I try so hard to show her everyday - in my own little way - sure I do not utter those three words all the time, but can't she see that I do? That by the death of me, I love her. Maybe I am a bad boyfriend - the way I make her cry so much - perhaps she'll leave me tonight.

I see him just sitting there. Even when I shout, even when I cry my eyes out, he just sits there. Doesn't he understand what I am trying to tell him? That all I ever wanted was for him to care half as much as I do. All I ever wanted was for him to tell me that he loves me. Is that so difficult? Why must I go through all this heartache just so that he gets such a simple concept? I must look like shit, crying with my nose dribbling everywhere. Now pick up a piece, gently place it in your mouth. Not the whole thing! Bite down slowly - taste how the bitter cocoa powder gives way to the sweet chocolate. You will not detect any hint of acidity that often accompanies bittersweet chocolate. Rather, your palate will notice the subtle background taste of liqueur and how it rounds up the bitterness and sweetness of that heavenly bite.

And with this act of biting down - you will notice that this is not your typical 'hard' chocolate, rather it has a more truffle-like texture. You know, that pleasant get-in-between-your teeth sort of texture?

Before long, that piece will be gone and you will be left with a pleasant aftertaste and an even better feeling of euphoria that is so characteristic of post-chocolate consumption.

Pumpkin Mascarpone Gnocchi: A Recipe

Recipe adapted from here because we cannot afford butternut squash

1 cup pumpkin or butternut squash
1 3/4 cup plain flour
1/2 cup grated Parmesan
1 cup mascarpone cheese
2 tbsp curry powder
2 eggs
1/2 tsp salt
Butter
Sage leaves

Microwave pumpkin until tender. Alternatively you can roast it - but who has the time?

Mash pumpkin into an indistinguishable pulp - don't worry about lumps; it gives your gnocchi character.

Fold pumpkin puree into softened mascarpone with eggs, curry powder, grated Parmesan and salt.

Add flour gradually - original recipe calls for 1 cup, I put more because I REFUSE TO CONFORM.

At this point, I folded in the ingredients to prevent over mixing for that would mean certain death.

Refrigerate overnight until firm

------------------------- I N T E R M I S S I O N----------------------------------

Bring lightly salted water up to the boil.

Shape the mixture into lumps resembling small pillows. I made them rather large - helps with texture

Lower gently into boiling water.

When it floats, it's cooked - transfer to buttered pan.

Pan fry gnocchi pieces until golden brown. Remove, reserve on warm plate.

In a saucepan - melt butter until all water has evaporated and milk solids turned a hazelnut brown

You will know when it's done when the butter mixture turns golden brown and has a nutty fragrance

Add in your sage leaves 30 seconds before it is done.

Done right, you've made beurre noisette or brown butter. Done wrongly, you've made burnt butter

Spoon 1 tbsp of that heavenly (cholesterol laden) nectar of the gods over the warm gnocchi.

Serve immediately.

Combine softened butter, sugar and the essence of vanilla
Listen to the sound of each individual grain of sugar brushing against the side of your mixing bowl.
Crack your eggs separately and watch as the yolks give your mixture that glorious golden hue.

Dear students of CIMP,

Next Wednesday, on the 18th of November 2009, you will be seated in the Multipurpose Hall of Sunway University College. Some of you will be wearing the CIMP July Semester T-shirt, courtesy of one of our Council Members. A fun fact - we charged you an obscene amount, as we are ones to do so. Decked in uniform, all of you will be seated on uncomfortable plastic chairs for two odd hours, depending on whether you take a toilet break or not. We are going to start off with the formalities; obligatory speeches from important people talking about how great the semester has been, thanking other important people, and maybe if we are lucky, an attempt or two at cracking a lame joke. We might be entertained with students’ performances; always a delight, unless of course if it's a horrible one - that's another story, for another time. Then the highlight, awards and other recognitions will be given out. Various names will be called out to be recognized for their academic and extracurricular achievements. You will clap; some enthusiastically, some less so. You will wait for the customary announcement to have the whole student council on stage to be awarded with a certificate for their contributions. You will wait, but there will be no such announcement. Instead, the president will be called on stage. Some of you will be shocked – this guy looks nothing like the person you vote for. This strange child will go on stage and talk about this semester. I do not want to presume on what he is going to say as the 18th is yet to come. But he will most probably boast about the achievements of council – like all past presidents – if we, once again are lucky. You will wonder why the student council members don’t get their certificates. But what you don’t know is that we already did. On the 10th of November, last Tuesday in room SW G 3 (citation needed). The certificates were handed out by our teacher adviser, witnessed by the tables and chairs in the room. You will once again, wonder why this is happening. You will never know why. You will never know why your votes don’t count and why you don’t have a say in the reelection of the president of a student body that is supposed to represent you. You will never know why the running candidate takes office instead of the vice (like in all democratic organizations). You will never know why you were never informed of the reason as to why the president you voted for was impeached. You will never know that when they say transparency, they really do mean opaque. You will never know that in CIMP, democracy does not exist and that in CIMP, you will never get to have a voice. As you shuffle back out to your respective classes, decked in your bland uniforms, you will never know.

Note to returning students: For the upcoming election for Student Council of Semester January 2010, do read the fine print at the bottom of your ballot sheet.

This is merely a show. Your votes don't really count, so it doesn't really matter if you vote or not

I am going to be away for 5 days. In order to make sure that you do not forget me, I have come up with a game for you to play. Basically, my blog will be updated with clues everyday, starting from today until the day I come back, on the locations of which I've hidden letters - that will hopefully help ease the loneliness.
